Gautam assumed a significant new external role when he became a Nominated Member of Parliament in January 2007. As an NMP, his main agenda has been to speak on issues which enhance Singapore's competitiveness as an emerging global city of opportunity. He has been particularly passionate about Singapore's need to not only retain its own talent but to attract the best and brightest from overseas. For example, in December 2006, he spoke to Singaporeans resident in the New York area as part of the "Distinguished Business Leaders" programme. More recently, he is assisting with the "Singapore Promise" programme, which aims to promote Singapore as an attractive destination to study, work and live.
