The US presidential election is fast aproaching. With the US financial crisis, the economy in recession and the military bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan, both candidates are aware that these are difficult times for their country . By 7 November, the people of America will have voted and the new President will have been chosen. What were the drivers in determining the election? Will these impact the kind of foreign policy of the future Administration? How will the new Administration deal with a growing Asia? With China's growing economic power, will the new President be able to work with the Chinese constructively?

In this session, the dialogue will focus on the impact of the new American leadership on Asia.

Analysts are predicting a steady decline in Europe and US market share as Asia grows. In this session, global business leaders from Asia, US and Europe give their views on Asia’s meteoric rise and how this would affect the global economy. More than ever, CEOs would need to understand the business practices  and cultural sensitivities the East and the West, in a playing field that is increasingly being levelled.

How do the US and Europe perceive the rise of Asia? How do the West view Asian global champions like Tata and Huawei? How can Asian companies create new markets and achieve long-term growth in Europe and the US? In what ways can the West capitalise on the growth of Asia? How can Asian businesses match the West in terms of innovation and R&D? How can the West maintain its innovative edge? How can Asian and Western leaders work together for mutual benefit? How can CEOs succeed in an increasingly multicultural and diverse business world?

Asia as a power: Financial and macroeconomic challenges

Macroeconomic stability is needed for Asia to sustain its current growth. It would need to improve its infrastructure, alleviate poverty and raise education standards. An infrastructure that ensures security and provides reasonable living standards would attract the investment needed to build, expand and upgrade its economy. Conversely, an infrastructure saddled with entrenched regulatory difficulties would increase risks and uncertainty for potential investors. Asia would also need to ensure its workforce are educated with the relevant skills needed for future growth.

What economic reforms are needed for a stable macroeconomic environment? How would Asia diversify and balance its economic growth? How can Asian financial markets and private equity be reinforced? How would Asian governments strengthen and reform their institutions? How would Asia create sufficient jobs for its growing labour market? How can Asia foster an open economic climate needed to enlarge markets and adopt new technology? How can the private and public sectors work together to remove obstacles to growth?

Asia and social innovation

Many Western firms like Unilever, IBM and Shell already embrace social innovation as an essential aspect of strategy. Many businesses in Asia now recognise the need to integrate social and environmental concerns on a voluntary basis in order to stay ahead. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) also represents opportunity for business – a strong incentive for a change in mindset for many Asian companies.

How can Asia innovate with a sustainability mindset? How are businesses in Asia making the leap from defensive CSR to exciting social innovation? How can Asian companies align social issues with financial profit goals? How should CEOs bridge the delicate balance between returning profits to shareholders and upholding their social responsibilities? How can Asian governments implement and enforce plans for sustainable development?
