Chairman, Health Authority – Abu Dhabi
Dr Ahmed Al Mazrouei was appointed Chairman of the Health Authority – Abu Dhabi in December 2006. He concurrently held the position of Chief Executive Officer from October 2005 until he appointed the CEO in January 2008. In this role, Dr Ahmed is responsible for all aspects of public and private sector health care in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, serving over 2.8 million national and expatriate residents. His mission is to direct the transition of a bureaucracy-controlled, public health service into a modern decentralized health system with an independent regulatory function, universal health insurance, and a maximum of private sector involvement to ensure the delivery of world-class health care to present and future generations in the Emirate, in line with the ambitious vision of the late Sheikh Zayed and the present government of Abu Dhabi.
Dr Ahmed currently serves as a member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, Chaired by the Crown Prince. He also serves as Chairman of the Civil Service Council and the Claims Committee. In October 2009, he was appointed as Chairman of the Board of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, the fully independent nuclear safety regulatory authority which will promote the highest standards of nuclear safety, nuclear security and radiological protection in the UAE nuclear energy sector. In November 2009, Dr Ahmed was appointed as the Deputy Secretary General of the General Secretariat of the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi. The General Secretariat is the administrative body entrusted to propose policies and strategies to be decided by the Executive Council, as well support services to the Executive Council.
Dr Ahmed served as Chairman of the Board of the National Health Insurance Company DAMAN and Chairman of the Board of SEHA (AD Health Services Company) from company inceptions up to April 2009. He also served as Chairman of the Department of Civil Service during their transition to the General Secretariat of the Executive Council from January – June 2009. Dr Ahmed was Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Joint Commission for International Accreditation for the Middle East & North Africa region until he was elected to the Joint Commission Resources (JCR) Board of Directors for the term 2008 & 2009. JCR is an affiliate of The Joint Commission and is the official publisher and educator of The Joint Commission. The Joint Commission, formerly the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), accredits and certifies over 17,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States.
Previously, Dr Ahmed served consecutively in other roles at the now devolved General Authority for Health Services, as Acting Chairman of the Executive Committee, Director for Health Audit and Improvement, Director of the International Affairs Division, and Head of Medical Programs in the Health Affairs Division. Prior to this, he managed Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, the largest and most important hospital in Abu Dhabi City for one-and-a-half years.
Dr Ahmed is a medical doctor by training and has successfully completed extensive Executive Education Programmes.
