March 2007
INSEAD participate as official academic partner at the 5th European Business Summit

More than 2,600 business leaders, journalists, NGOs, academics and policy makers - including the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso and nine European Commissioners attended the 5th European Business Summit on the 15 - 16 March, 2007, in Brussels.

At this year's summit entitled "Reform to Perform: Europe is our Business", four plenary sessions were held, 12 workshops and 21 parallel sessions in which

participants contributed to debates on a higher performing Europe. As most of the speakers stated on the future of Europe, including our Dean Frank Brown, "There is no room for complacency".

Our friend and Board member Ernest-Antoine Seillière, who was one of the key hosts, welcomed Dean Frank Brown and his wife Susan on their arrival at the summit. On the second day INSEAD held an intimate lunch hosted by Dean Frank Brown, Soumitra Dutta, Dean of External Relations and Jean-Charles Uyttenhove MBA '83J, President of the Belgium National Alumni Association. The lunch was a great success with more than 50 alumni and friends of INSEAD attending. John Defterios, an award-winning correspondent and anchor, who is producer and host of a weekly television show "World Business", on CNBC in Europe, also joined the lunch and stayed for Frank's following remarks as he is interested in working with INSEAD in the future.

Among alumni attending were Sophie Velge MBA '87D, Roger Wippermann MBA '66, Baudouin Contzen MBA '89D, Tom Barrett MBA '78, Anna Zygulska MBA '93D and Mark Spelman MBA '83J - who also spoke at one of the workshops. Pierre Hermant, General Manager of the European Business Summit and journalists from Trends, de Tijd and l’Echo also attended the lunch.

Workshop moderated by Frank Brown: European Technology Platforms: developing lead markets?
After lunch, Frank thanked alumni and guests for their presence, highlighting the importance of alumni support and the richness of the INSEAD network. Frank expressed INSEAD's ambition to strengthen its brand and reputation at high level events such as the World Ecomonic Forum meetings, the European Business Summit and the forthcoming INSEAD Leadership Summit by involving media partners. He also spoke about the importance of the role of Europe and INSEAD's European roots, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome and the founding of INSEAD in 1957. Frank stated, "An increasing number of alumni are joining European Union organisations such as
the European Commissions or the European Investment Bank or Fund, and they are willing to help INSEAD increase its involvement in these organisations."

Following lunch, Dean Frank Brown moderated a workshop - 'European Technology Platforms: developing lead markets?' Among the speakers were Dr. Monica Beltrametti, Vice President and Director, Xerox Research Centre Europe, Xerox Global Technology & Offering Development; Bernard Meric, Senior Vice President, Hewlett-Packard EMEA; Dr. Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for Science and Research.

Frank focused his advice on better communication of developments in technology platforms. The workshop generated extremely interactive discussions between the panel of speakers and the Commissioner, giving the business communities attending many new suggestions to take away with them.
